Imagine doing a cover of John Lennon’s iconic song, Imagine. It really was something that just happened. Growing up I wouldn’t say I was particularly a Beatles fan. But now I have a whole new appreciation for their work.

Steinway & Sons had invited me to do one of their Christmas concerts where I got to play the John Lennon Steinway ‘Imagine’ Piano. There are only 25 of these exclusive pianos in the world and I got the awesome opportunity to perform on one. I completely fell in love with it and started becoming intrigued by John Lennon’s life reading his biography and letters. I performed his song ‘Imagine’ in a benefit concert for Autism and decided I wanted it to be a part of the Give Voice EP. I was so thrilled when Downtown Music Publishing, Lennon’s publishing company, granted me the licensing fairly easily. So I recorded the piano for the song on the Steinway John Lennon Imagine piano and had two of my favorite guitar players, Gary Kalinosky and Mike Moscato, play on it. Hollis Greathouse, my co-producer and engineer created such a peaceful environment at Audible Images to record the vocals. And it all felt like a kind of kismet.

Some people think the song is atheist in nature because of lyrics like ‘imagine there’s no heaven’. But I don’t see it that way at all. I think the lyrics invite us to see the world in an idealistic way. I think they get us to ponder the notion of what the world would be like if our beliefs didn’t separate us. What if creating peace was more important than our beliefs. I think the lyrics ask us, even just to imagine for a few moments, what it would be like to let go of boundaries, beliefs, ideas; anything that separates us and instead choose unconditional love which is the doorway to peace. I think love would have to be more important than our convictions and beliefs in order to achieve world peace. So that is why I wanted to do the song. I think the world needs hope for peace now more than ever.

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
