Rahila – the voice of an Afghanistan girl

Rahila is a song I wrote about a girl who really existed in Afghanistan. I was reading an article one day about the girls in Africa that were kidnapped on their way to school which included this story about this Afghanistan girl named Rahila. Despite all the abuse from her father and brother, she secretly taught herself to read and write and became a poet. But the oppression was too much to take. She committed suicide as a protest for all she was not allowed to do. In the article were four lines from one of her poems that she left behind; I CALL, YOU’RE STONE, ONE DAY YOU’LL LOOK AND FIND THAT I’M GONE. I wanted to write a song around those 4 lines of Rahila’s poetry and give voice to her story so her protest would not be in vain. All proceeds to this songs are being donated to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.

RAHILA
VERSE 1:
I walk to school in fear
Looking down at the ground
Hoping those men are not around
I am a child of God
I’m not a piece for sale
I write my story I’ll die to tell
I deserve a chance
To be all that I’m meant to
And to learn to dance
Hiding under cloth
When it’s my write to be who I am
With no apologies
But they don’t hear me

CHORUS
I CALL
YOU’RE STONE
ONE DAY YOU’LL LOOK AND FIND THAT I’M GONE

VERSE 2:
My name is Rahila
This is my poem
I taught myself to read and write
I live in Afghanistan
When they see I can
My brother and father beat me down
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh,
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhhh
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh

CHORUS:
I CALL
YOU’RE STONE
ONE DAY YOU’LL LOOK AND FIND THAT I’M GONE
I’LL FIGHT
NO MORE
BE FREE TO WALK THE ROAD TO MY HOME

BRIDGE:
I take a stand for all I am not, for all I am not allowed to do
I take my own life so I can be free, I can free from you
From you, from you
I am free from you
I am free

Oh I’m home, oh I’m home
My name is Rahila
My name is Rahila
My name is Rahila

All This Time: Blog post #1

All This time…..how do we spend it?  What are we doing with it?  Are we doing the things we love to do?  Are we doing the things we believe we must do?  Or are we spending time without a thought about the end?  There is alot of time in this life.  But then there also isn’t.  We’ve done amazing things.  And not so amazing things.  We’ve loved.  We’ve hurt.  We’ve dreamed.  The past we try to hold.  We hope for the future.  But what about RIGHT NOW?  To quote Robin Williams in the ‘Dead Poets Society’.  ‘Seize the day.’  What are we doing right now to fully live the moment.  All we really have is the moment.  We may think we have all this time.  But there are no guarantees.  No guarantees in this life.  So disappointments will happen.  Miracles will happen.  And to quote Forest Gump, ‘Life is a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get’.  But is that gonna stop you from going after what you want in life.  What you dream in life.   Because your work and your faith will make a difference in the outcome.  It may still be a surprise.  But it will be something good.  That is true.  I’ve lived that much at least.  So what are going to do with all this time…. live it like you have all the time in the world and your dreams can wait for another day OR live it like there are no guarantees and it could all be over tomorrow so you better get cracking?  The truth is you don’t have all the time in the world.  So face that truth and get cracking!
